We are cups, constantly being filled. The trick is nowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out. First you must choose your style and genre. Anything you dream is fiction, anything you accomplish is science, the whole history of mankind is nothing but science fiction. Science fiction is the most important literature in the world, because it's the history of ideas, the history of our civilization birthing itself. Science fiction is central to everything we've ever done, and people who make fun of science fiction writers don't know what they're talking about. I am a writer and you will be a writer. My job is to help you fall in love. I cannot tell you a sure way to write successfully. My stories run up and bite me in the leg, I respond by writing everything down that goes on during the bite. When I finish, the idea lets go and runs off. So while our art cannot, as we wish it could, save us from war, privation, envy, greed, old age, or death, it can revitalize us amidst it all.
